Kotor with Children: What Works, What Tires Them and What to Skip

Updated October 11, 2026 · 5 min read

Red semi-submarine with underwater windows moving across calm water in the Bay of Kotor

The answer first: Kotor works best with children when you keep the day compact: Old Town early, one short water activity and a long break in the hottest hours. The lanes are interesting but cobbled, the fortress is demanding, and the most famous Blue Cave trips can be noisy and bumpy. For younger children, a calm bay cruise or the red semi-submarine is usually easier than a long speedboat run.

Old Town without turning it into a lesson

Enter through the Sea Gate, see the Clock Tower and let the narrow lanes do the work. Cats, tiny squares, stone staircases and boats in the harbour hold attention better than a long sequence of church interiors. A short Old Town walking tour can suit school-age children who enjoy stories, but a private guide or a short format is easier than a large group.

Pushchairs manage the flatter main lanes, though cobbles, thresholds and steps make the experience uneven. Do not describe the Old Town as step-free. A baby carrier is more practical for side lanes, but families should choose what is safe and comfortable for them.

Which boat experience is easiest?

The red semi-submarine family trip stays in the bay and adds an underwater cabin. Visibility depends on light and water conditions, so treat the windows as a novelty rather than a promise of abundant marine life. Check the operator’s current age rules, boarding arrangement, life jackets and toilet information before booking.

A two-hour Perast trip is the next manageable step. It combines time on the water with a clear destination and avoids the longer exposed run towards the Blue Cave. Speedboat operators set their own participation rules, so check the minimum age with the operator. Never assume that “family friendly” means suitable for a baby.

For children prone to seasickness, ask a pharmacist or paediatrician before the trip rather than following medication advice online. Sitting where the operator recommends, looking at the horizon and choosing a calmer morning departure may help, but no sea state is guaranteed.

The fortress: know when to stop

San Giovanni is not a casual pushchair outing. The path has many irregular stone steps, little shade and a demanding descent. Active older children may enjoy the challenge early in the day. With younger children, stop at a lower viewpoint or skip it. The municipal ticket costs €15; check the official site for any child rate.

Heat, swimming and a realistic rhythm

Kotor’s enclosed position can feel hot and still in summer. Start outdoors early, eat and rest around midday, then return to the waterfront later. Markov Rt, near Donji Stoliv, is a beach often suggested for families, but it lies outside the Old Town, so check current conditions, transport and facilities locally.

Do not plan a fortress climb, Blue Cave trip and formal Old Town tour on the same family day. One main activity plus free time leaves room for snacks, toilets and a change of mood.

Our recommendation

For most families, choose Old Town plus the semi-submarine or a short Perast boat trip. Save the Blue Cave for confident swimmers and children comfortable on speedboats, subject to the operator’s rules. The best Kotor family day is not the one with the most stops; it is the one that ends before everyone is exhausted.
