Kotor City Walls and San Giovanni Fortress: Climb, Ticket and Best Time

Updated October 11, 2026 · 6 min read

Stone ramparts zigzagging above the red roofs of Kotor Old Town

The answer first: climb the Kotor City Walls early in the morning if you are comfortable with steep, uneven stone steps. The municipal ticket currently costs €15. The view over the red roofs and the innermost Bay of Kotor is the reward; the fortress itself is atmospheric rather than a polished museum. In hot weather, turning around at the Church of Our Lady of Remedy can be the wiser choice.

Ticket and official entrances

The Municipality of Kotor sells one ticket for the city walls and San Giovanni, also called St John or Sveti Ivan Fortress. The individual price is €15. Some groups may be exempt or pay a different rate, so check the conditions on the official site before you go.

There are two official entrances inside the Old Town. The northern entrance at Parilo is just behind the Church of St Mary Collegiate; the southern entrance at Škaljarska pjaca lies in the southern part of the Old Town, near Salata Square. Buying online can remove the ticket-booth queue, but it does not turn the climb into a timed or guided visit. Check the official Kotor City Walls site before setting out because access arrangements can change.

Opening times change with the season

The staffed gates operate daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. between 1 May and 30 September, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in March and April, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in October and November. From December through February the ticket booths are closed. The municipality prohibits being on or climbing the walls after 10 p.m. throughout the year because the steep route is unlit.

These are gate and booth hours, not a promise about weather or trail conditions. Rain makes old stone slippery, while the exposed upper section becomes punishing in summer sun. For most visitors, the best slot is the first hour after opening. Late afternoon can be beautiful, but leave enough daylight for the descent.

How hard is the climb?

This is a real uphill walk, not a paved viewpoint. Expect long flights of irregular steps, worn surfaces and little shade. Wear footwear that grips, carry water and do not judge the descent by how easy the first section felt. There is no need to race to the top: the church terrace already gives a strong view over the Old Town and bay.

The full ascent suits active visitors with time and stable footing. It is a poor choice in midday heat, in wet weather, with a pushchair or for anyone who finds high, uneven steps difficult. An Old Town walking tour stays below the mountain and is the better historical option when the climb is wrong for you.

Is the entry ticket tour worth booking?

The Kotor City Walls entry ticket is useful if you want a cancellable online booking and a QR code ready before arrival. Compare its current total with the municipality’s €15 direct price before paying; a reseller’s terms and currency conversion may differ. It is admission, not a guide and not transport.

Our recommendation

Go at opening time and decide at Our Lady of Remedy whether you still have the legs, water and weather for the summit. The complete climb is rewarding, but the sensible experience is the one you can descend safely. If your day is short, combine the lower walls with the lanes, squares and churches of Kotor rather than spending the whole visit chasing the highest point.
